This site aims to be a source of information on the BC Societies Act. Its mission is to provide commentary and document resources from government and industry in plain language. Its audience is those running societies, whether they be directors, volunteers, or senior managers; those interested in starting societies; volunteers; and advisors to the non-profit sector, such as lawyers, accountants, and volunteer managers.
This site is a project of Steve Carey, a lawyer based out of Victoria, British Columbia. Steve has spent the majority of his career providing legal services to BC societies, non-profit corporations, and charities. Steve was formerly a member of the charities and not-for-profit group at a leading regional law firm based in Vancouver, and has participated in the voluntary sector through various charities and societies as a director, volunteer, and employee. Since 2014, he has been a director-at-large of the Canadian Bar Association’s Charities and Not-for-Profit Subsection (BC), and serves as the legislative liaison.
